instead, silence
I didn’t mean to be gone so long.
When we came home from a long weekend in Palm Springs, I planned to post here within the week. But, instead, silence. And I don’t really know why. It’s not that I didn’t have anything to say about the weekend. To the contrary, I had plenty to say, but nothing seemed to leap from my mind to the screen.
For a while, I blamed the several poolside Pacificos, threaded with lime, sipped that weekend, and the pleasant haze they produced. I could have also blamed the pool itself, lima bean-shaped and turquoise, glittering under the desert sun; I fixed my gaze on that water for hours, it seemed. The sun, too, could have been the source of my silence—muting me with its heat.
Or those swishing, namesake palm fronds, their gentle sway sending off a hypnotizing whisper. Maybe I was simply heeding their command: shhhhhhhh.
I needed this trip, to slow down, to thaw, to think. To do the things I adore—spending full days with Kevin, cooking (our rented house had a kitchen I would be thrilled to call my own), seeing what was around me through the lens of my camera, fresh air, strolls, a good book, sudden sunsets.
Back to reality, the silence has been slow—wonderfully slow—to slide away. But now, I’m hoping my voice will return soon. I’m ready, again, for the regular. My plan is to be back here soon with a recipe and, I hope, a return to more frequent posting.
More photos from the weekend here.

Kristin, your blog isn’t one of the big, showy ones that gets a lot of attention (I hope you know what I’m trying to say), but every time I see a new post in my Reader, it’s the first one I click. It’ll be nice to have you back
Oooh, I can’t wait to scroll through more Palm Springs photos! My friend just came back from a week there at the Ace hotel and it sounded just like your photos. Sigh. I’m officially jealous, but happy to live through your images and words.
Welcome back. These quiet pictures are wonderful.
yay, I check your blog almost daily (even thow I don’t know you at all… but it became part of my go-online-and-check-a few-things-ritual…). great to have some news!
I agree with ‘ronniessweetooth’. You may not have the ‘most popular’ blogger award, but your writing, photos and recipes are a true gem in the sea of blogs out there. I also look forward to your updates and click on them as soon as they show. BUT, I dont mind waiting either. Makes the post even sweeter to read. I cant handle other blogs that update 3-4 times a day, I have 4 kids and there is no way I could catch up on someone posting that much. Your blog is the perfect little escape, love it.
Love these photos! And I’ve had such similar feelings, when I come home from vacation my mind tends to linger in lala land for awhile until I can coax it home with the rest of me…
I want to go there right now.
Any chance you’d be willing to share the rental house info? Looks devine.
i know the feeling! great photos, glad you got away for a bit

I’m so jealous. I’m stuck doing biology homework.
