Here are some photos of our first meal of 2013: a decadent breakfast of brioche French toast, (very) crisp peppered bacon, and berries.  Needless to say, our year is off to a delicious start.  I’ve included a photo of another first—Avery’s first taste of solid food (oatmeal!).  I’m so excited for the new year and all that it will hold, from more delicious meals (more of which I hope to share here, even it means more photos-and-recipes-only posts, like this) to dozens more firsts for Avery.

Happy new year to you and yours.

Special Occasion French Toast

Serves 2

3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon bourbon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch salt
4 1-inch slices of brioche
1 to 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for serving
powdered sugar, for serving
maple syrup, for serving

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.  Place an oven-safe plate or baking sheet in the oven.

In a shallow dish (like a pie plate), whisk together the milk, cream, bourbon, vanilla, cinnamon and salt.  Melt one tablespoon of butter a large skillet over medium heat.  Working one piece at a time, dip the bread in the milk mixture, giving the bread a few seconds per side to soak up the milk mixture.  Fry the soaked bread pieces, one or two at a time (depending on the size of your skillet), in the heated skillet, allowing each side to nicely brown.  Place fried pieces on the plate/sheet in the oven, to keep them warm as you finish frying the remaining pieces.  Add more butter to the skillet as needed.

Dust the French toast with powdered sugar, and serve with butter and syrup.

This looks fantastic and has me re-thinking the term “special occasion.” And Avery’s face is amazing… grabbing that spoon like a champ!
