highlight of the summer

We didn’t take one big, long summer vacation this year.  Instead, we had many long-weekend visitors, and took a few weekend trips of our own.  In some ways, it made the summer feel like one big long vacation, in and of itself.  It’s been pretty fantastic.  So, it’s really saying something when I go as far as to proclaim Saturday afternoon’s boat ride on Lake Union, which we took with my parents and sister who were in town visiting, a highlight of the summer.  We had such a lovely time.  There were refreshments:

And so many boats, of all different shapes and sizes:

And a baby thrilled to watch the float planes take off and land, and then content to fall asleep (FTW!) in the arms of her aunt:

And there were new perspectives on so many of our favorite features of Seattle, like Gasworks Park and the eclectic house boats—what a treat to see them from the water:

And light dancing on the water, as the sun began to slip closer to the horizon:

So, no new recipe today.  Instead, a collection of some other summer highlights—our favorite dishes that we’ve cooked again and again this season:

Enjoy these final days of summer, friends!

I just made that sirloin with piquillo peppers & capers recipe a couple of weeks ago. It was so good—definitely a keeper! Lovely photos of your day on the lake…Avery looks so sweet and content.

My mom lives on the east side of a bay, so when the sun sets, she gets a view like your last picture. She’s christened it “sparkle hour”.

(and hello from chicago! I discovered your blog a few months ago, I wish I had known about it sooner, it was exactly the type of blog I’d been looking to read about cooking around here. It’s just as fun reading about your new adventures though :-))

Emily: Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked the sirloin recipe – so good.

Christina: Oh, I love that — the sparkle hour. Say hi to Chicago for me. I’ve been missing it lately.
